Foundation Fellows Contribute to New Publication
Vladimer Papava, Senior Fellow, and Thea Kentchadze, Research Fellow, have contributed articles to a Special Edition of Central Asia and the Caucasus: Journal of Social and Political Studies. The issue, introduced with a foreword by Eldar Ismailov, is entitled GUAM: From a Tactical Alliance to Strategic Partnership (3-4, 51-52, 2008).
The issue’s articles address the topics of globalisation and the formation of new regional organisations and the GUAM and its relations amongst regional world powers, its role and connection to regional security problems and the territorial integrity of its member states.
“The importance of the GUAM cannot be underestimated,†said Dr Vladimer Papava in discussing his article ‘On the Role of the Caucasian Tandem in the GUAM.’ “The realisation of the possibility for the further development of the organisation is vitally important for the West and so the actions of the United States and the European Union as regard enlarging its format should be intensified.â€
Thea Kentchadze, in her article entitled ‘GUAM: The Georgian Perspective,’ discusses the organisation in terms of the opportunities which it provides for Georgia as one of the founding member states whilst also analysing the challenges and obstacles it faces in becoming a fully functional regional entity. “The GUAM is now going through a testing period,†Kentchadze writes. “If it manages to establish itself as a real, value-driven alliance, it has a chance to become the primary mechanism for promoting the common interests of its members; namely, stable development and security in the Caspian-Black Sea region and integration into the European and Euro-Atlantic structures.â€
