MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced Tuesday that he has ordered an end to military operations against Georgia. The announcement came minutes before French President Nicolas Sarkozy was to land in Moscow to meet with Medvedev to negotiate terms for a possible cease-fire.
The hereby signers, are making a statement to express our support to the Republic of Georgia, currently being attacked by the Russian Federation, we are making a call to the European Union, the United States of America, and all peoples and nations of the world to repulse the current aggressions being performed by the Russian military lead by president Dmitry Medvedev and prime minister Vladimir Putin; our plead is to call the nations of the world and all International Organizations, to demand an immediate ceasefire and the removal of Russian troops off Georgian territories; we also call the Russian people to reject the hostilities and urge their government to return to peace.

On July 16 - 17 2008, GFSIS and the EU Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) hosted a conference on "Georgia and the EU -“ Prospects for Cooperation and Integration." This event brought together representatives of the EU and member states; international analysts; and figures from Georgian government, political parties, and civil society.
On 30 June, 2008 the GFSIS honoured the graduates of the "Training Course for Georgian Journalists in National Security and International Relations Issues." The course, funded by the Embassy of the United States in Tbilisi, was the third in a series designed to train print, broadcast and e-media journalists in issues related to foreign and domestic security policies, economics and important issues facing states in transition. The programme was formally launched at the Foundation on 27 November 2007.
The GFSIS, in partnership with the Atlantic Council of the United States and the Harriman Institute at Columbia University, hosted a Frozen Conflicts Forum on Abkhazia on 19 June, 2008. The day-long event, held at the Foundation's premises, featured four panels of presentations: Humanitarian Issues and IDP Returns, Security and Peacekeeping, CBMs and Recent Proposals and Russia's Role in the Abkhaz Conflict.
Mr Tucker is an expert in leadership and change management. He currently serves as a Senior Advisor and Special Lecturer at the School of Public Administration at Dalhousie University where he teaches courses on Labour Management Relations and Change Management.
Three days training of instructors (12 instructors in the first group and 11 instructors in the second group) for further ICT training and consulting in Georgia and one seminar with broader participation (29 participants) were arranged. The activity was carried out at GFSIS in the framework of Joint Project - GFSIS - LIKTA (Latvia) - UNDP- Georgia.
The year-long training programme, funded jointly by the Embassies of Greece and Switzerland in Tbilisi and under the direction of the GFSIS, featured the participation of 12 young leaders from Georgia's ethnic Greek minority community who took part in a specially designed programme to facilitate their further integration into the Georgian state.
Daniel P. Fata, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for European and NATO Policy, was a guest of the GFSIS on 18 April 2008. Mr Fata spoke to a group of Georgian governmental, civil society and media representatives on the results of the NATO Summit which took place in Bucharest, Romania earlier this month.
On April 9, 2008 GFSIS hosted a discussion with Colleen Graffy, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs. Ms. Graffy spoke about the intimate relation between public diplomacy and foreign policymaking.
The GFSIS and the Brookings Institution organised and hosted an event entitled "Frontiers of Europe Workshop: Challenges of Stabilisation and Reform in the Caucasus" which took place on 6 - 7 April at the premises of the Foundation.
The President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, visited the GFSIS on 28 March 2008. President Saakashvili, speaking within an international workshop entitled "The Role of Non-Governmental Organisations in the Processes of Reintegration in Georgia" and organised by the Office of the Georgian State Minister for Reintegration, unveiled a series of new proposals designed to resolve the Abkhazian conflict.

On 31 March, 2008 GFSIS hosted a presentation by Jeffrey Gedmin, the President of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL). David Kakabadze, the Director of RFE/RL's Georgia Service, joined Mr. Gedmin in the discussion. Mr. Gedmin spoke about the importance of a free press to the development of a stable democracy, and about the role of the press in Georgia.
The Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies hosted a regional conference on 27 - 28 March at the Courtyard by Marriot hotel in Tbilisi within the framework of its Public Policy Knowledge Network (PPKN).
The GFSIS, the International Association of Young Diplomats, Businessmen, Scientists and Lawyers and the Strategic Research Centre of the Yeditepe University in collaboration with NATO, TIKA and Tantim Fonu organised an international conference entitled "Security Through Europe From Turkey to the South Caucasus" which was held on 27 - 28 March at the premises of the Foundation.
The GFSIS, in collaboration with the Central Asia Caucasus Institute - Silk Road Studies Programme (Stockholm), hosted a roundtable working session on 5 March at the Foundation's premises to address the issue of strengthening national integration in Georgia.
A graduation ceremony was held at the Foundation on 29 February to formally confer certificates upon the sixth group of graduates of the Training Course in International Relations and National Security. Funded by the United States Department of State, the programme offers seminars on topics including small states, globalisation, economics, research methods and Euro-Atlantic structures, amongst others, and has an impressive group of alumni of over a hundred fellows since it was started in 2002. Currently, the programme is running in its seventh year.
GFSIS hosted a panel discussion on the US presidential primary elections. David J. Smith, Director of the Georgian Security Analysis Center, spoke about the primary process; Stephen Guice, Press Attache at the US Embassy, discussed the history of party nominations in the US; and Jonathan Kulick, Director of Studies at GFSIS, reviewed the current candidates and their campaign strategies.
