A roundtable discussion, entitled "Georgian-Iranian Relations: Economic, Political and Cultural Issues," was held at the GFSIS on 19-21 June, 2007. "I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the Foundation for organizing this event," said Dr. Manuchehr Moradi, Director of the Centre of Eurasian Studies at the Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS). "It is a very big step towards developing co-operation between Iran and Georgia."
CASE - the Center for Social and Economic Research is an independent non-profit institute founded on the idea that research-based policy-making is vital for the economic welfare of societies. Established in Warsaw in 1991, CASE today is an internationally renowned think tank drawing on the talents of prominent economists and driving the creation of a network of partner institutions in transition countries. CASE carries out policy-oriented research and development assistance projects, specializing in questions of European integration, post-communist transition, and the global economy.
Mr Andrius Kubilius, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Seimas of Lithuania and former leader of the Opposition, and members of his delegation visited the GFSIS on 29 May, 2007 as a part of their official visit to Georgia.
Interview with Prof. Vladimer Papava. A lawmaker from the ruling National Movement party, Vladimer Papava, spoke with Civil.Ge about reasons why he thinks that setting up of a free economic zone is not a good idea for Georgia. Papava, a senior fellow at the Tbilisi-based think-tank GFSIS, also spoke out against abuse of property rights and inflation.
On May 10, 2007, GFSIS held an outreach seminar in Batumi under the aegis of its project "Raising Awareness about European Union in Georgia". The host of the event was Batumi State University. The study seminar was devoted to Europe's Day, celebrated on May 9th. GFSIS extends its gratitude to the State Minister's office for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration for its help in organizing the outreach seminar, as well as the rector of the Batumi State University, Mr. Vladimer Balavadze, for his cooperation.
On May 8th, 2007 GFSIS held a graduation ceremony of the 4th cycle of trainees of the Course on European Integration, under the aegis of GFSIS project "Raising Awareness about European Union in Georgia". The project is developed under the call for proposals by the European Commission's Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency, Erasmus, Jean Monnet.
The GFSIS hosted another in a series of regular meetings of the Human Resources Managers Network within the framework of its Public Policy Knowledge Network (PPKN) programme on 8 May, 2007.
GFSIS Public Policy Knowledge Network (PPKN) fellows, HR managers and alumni participated in a retreat which was held in Tsinandali, Kakheti Region, on 28 April, 2007.
The 37 members of the Society, having begun their trip in Baku, Azerbaijan, will spend five days in Georgia before travelling to Yerevan, Armenia as a part of their two-week Study Tour of the South Caucasus. With a focus on Georgia, the purpose of the visit is to offer participants the opportunity to become further acquainted with the political situation in the three countries and to learn more about the relations between them whilst exploring those with neighbouring countries as well as with the European Union and NATO.
GFSIS honoured the graduates of the fifth year of the RAND Advanced Security Studies Programme. Twenty-two students, drawn from Georgian government service and civil society, completed a rigourous year-long programme in economics, policy analysis and security studies. The Ambassador of the United States to Georgia, Mr John Tefft, welcomed the graduates, and GFSIS President, Dr Alexander Rondeli, conferred their certificates of graduation.
On Saturday, April 21, 2007 Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies hosted a meeting of NATO Parliamentary Assembly members with representatives of Georgian NGOs and civil society. The event was part of 65th Rose-Roth Seminar titled "Georgia Towards Euro-Atlantic Integration", conducted by the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in cooperation with the Parliament of Georgia.
The project, funded by the Democracy Commission Small Grants Programme, Public Affairs Section, of the US Embassy in Tbilisi, trained a selected group of 25 journalists from the print and electronic media in issues relating to international relations, transformation and globalisation, economic transition, state territorial arrangement, European integration, anti-terrorism, political-risk analysis, nationalism and ethnic conflicts and the principles of democracy, amongst others.
The Foundation, in co-operation with the Georgian Council on Foreign Relations and the Atlantic Council of Georgia, was very pleased to welcome him and members of his delegation for an afternoon programme of events which included the official inauguration of the NATO Depository Library for Georgia and a public roundtable session.
