Ambassador of Japan to Georgia Visits GFSIS 23 April 2010
April 23rd, 2010 HE Mr. Masayoshi Kamohara, the Ambassador of Japan to Georgia, presented a public lecture titled Foreign Policy of Japan in the 20th Century at GFSIS. Mr. Ambassador spoke about the peculiarities of Japan’s geopolitical location, a unique feudal system and the 19th century isolation as the key factors defining Japan’s foreign policy development at its early stages.
He discussed how the interests of the world’s largest powers intersected in East Asia and impacted Japan’s initial attempts to enter the international community and to establish ties with Europe and the rest of the world. HE Mr. Kamohara continued with a thorough overview of Japan’s foreign policy in light of the biggest historical events of the 20th century.
Lastly, Mr. Ambassador discussed Japan’s movement toward the XXI century and defined cooperation in non-military fields as the main course of Japan’s contemporary foreign policy. He highlighted Japan’s growing participation in UN activities and its contribution to peacekeeping operations worldwide. In this context, Mr. Ambassador stressed the importance that modern Japan attaches to reforms in the UN, and in particular in the UN Security Council. At the conclusion of the lecture HE Mr. Kamohara answered a number of questions from the audience. The attendees included analysts, experts, diplomats and students.
