On April 7th, 2010 Professor Arnon Sofer (Haifa University, Israel) presented a lecture titled Geopolitics of the Middle East and the Caucuses at GFSIS. Professor Sofer spoke about the changing geopolitics of the Middle East and the Caucasus. He discussed how demography, natural resources, as well as climate change, are becoming influential factors in defining geopolitics and national security priorities of the regional states. Professor Sofer defined the regions’ specific demographic situations as a national security challenge for neighboring countries. Israel and Georgia were singled out by Professor Sofer as states with serious security concerns for the future, stemming from a low natural population growth in both countries. At the conclusion of the lecture Professor Sofer answered a number of questions from the audience. The attendees included analysts, experts, diplomats and students.
