Internships

General Information

As one of the premier institutions for national security training and analysis in the South Caucasus, GFSIS offers a unique internship experience for students interested in international security, post-Soviet studies, and economic development. Situated in the capital of Georgia, GFSIS gives interns the opportunity to learn about the region first-hand from analysts and government officials around the region.

Interns will not be asked to do administrative tasks; they will be engaged in substantive work, doing news gathering, news analysis, and conference summaries for GFSIS publications and the GFSIS website. Interns will also help write grants for the foundation and will have the opportunity to attend meetings and conferences with leading scholars, government officials, and journalists throughout Georgia and the South Caucasus. We are seeking motivated students who will participate in our research projects but who will also conduct their own research and writing.

Eligibility

·         Must have native fluency in English and have excellent writing skills with no need of editing.

·         Must be a college junior, a college senior, a recent graduate, or a graduate student.

·         Must have a GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).

·         Need not be fluent in Russian or Georgian, though familiarity or fluency in one of these is useful.

Compensation

Unfortunately, GFSIS cannot provide compensation or course credit. However, for those accepted into the program, GFSIS will gladly write a letter of recommendation and certification of the internship to a granting institution to support the internship. In the past, interns have received funding from their colleges or from philanthropic institutions in the United States.

Visa and Housing

GFSIS will support a visa application for the duration of all internships. American students may contact the American Councils for International Education to arrange their housing, while others should be able to find families to stay with or apartments through alternative avenues.

When to Apply

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, however we ask that you please apply at least three months before you expect to begin your internship. This is the approximate amount of time needed to review your application, obtain a visa, and coordinate housing. If you are applying for a more traditional fall, winter, spring, or summer internship, deadlines are as follows:

·         Summer Internship (May – August): January 31, 2005

·         Fall Internship (September – December): May 31, 2005

·         Winter Internship (January – March): September 31, 2005

·         Spring Internship (March – May): December 31, 2005

Application Materials

The following materials should be included in the application:

·         Cover letter. Your letter should include an explanation of what interests you about the South Caucasus region and an explanation of how an internship at GFSIS fits into your future career plans. Please address your letter to Alexander Rondeli, President of GFSIS.

·         Resume. Your resume should not exceed two pages and should include, at a minimum, your undergraduate GPA and relevant work experience.

·         Writing samples. Please include two to three writing samples, not to exceed a total of 20 pages. At least one sample should be in the field of international relations or in the field of post-Soviet studies.

·         Recommendations. Please include two recommendations from professors or from work-related supervisors. Recommendations should address writing ability, work ethic, and interest in international relations. The two individuals writing your recommendation should email their comments directly to GFSIS at the address below.

All applicants should apply by email and include their application materials attached as PDF files or as Microsoft Word documents.
